About Live Gigs and Concerts

A concert is the correct term for when an a band, single musician, orchestra, choir etc perform before an audience. Other terms that are commonly used are a 'gig' or a 'show'. Concerts can take place in a variety of different places, including arenas, pubs and clubs (for more information see our 'types of venue' page) .
When it comes to rock/pop acts playing live music, many of them will go on tours. A lot of the time a tour will consist of the performing artistes travelling to venues all around the world, stopping off in various country's. However tours are not always world wide and are just based in the performing artistes home country. On other occasions a band may just play a one off gig, this is usually a well known performing artist with a huge fan base and will more than likely take place in in a arena in front of tens of thousands of people.

A gig or concert will usually be set up by the performers promoter, who will arrange which venues the performer or band will play at. It is common practice to implement some form of admission charge for a concert or gig, although there are also free concerts. The proceeds from the ticket sales traditionally go to the performing artistes, producers, and organisers and promoters.
